Understanding how ratings and submissions work simply
Lets say you have a web site and want to make sure it gets proper exposure without all the hype and paying too much money.
There's been a number of ways to do this over the years by having others link your site. This is usually just a list or lists of hyperlinks. Sample: Joes Madison Jewelry
Problem with this is that the major spiders Google, Inktomi, Yahoo, etc have started to move away from this format because its well known to be spammed in essence and not relevant to results.
What the spiders look for now is more information and weighted value of data contained in a listing.
A method that does work and will remain for a long time is to have a web site posted in many search engines where data is not recovered but given more weight for popularity.

Since other search engines will contain information like above, the major search spiders will also spider this site as well!
Also notice that because of the more weight of information we can expect to see even sites like Ebay to pop up on searches because they have more information, data, and weight to the search.
Bottom line is to add your site to other search engines and directories as possible, and to make sure your web page contains more than a few hyperlinks. I always advise that adding a few paragraphs about your business or area of concern on your web page should be included. The key is weighted information!!
